Forums to focus on recent fatal shootings by police

Two forums will he held this week to ease tensions after recent fatal shootings by police - the deaths of Paul Childs, 15, in Denver, and Denise Washington, 30, in Aurora.

Childs was developmentally disabled and Washington was mentally ill.

The aim of each forum is to give residents time to talk about their concerns and develop possible solutions for police to prevent similar deaths.

"There are people in our community who say the shootings made them afraid," said the Rev. Patrick Demmer of the Greater Metro Denver Ministerial Alliance, which is organizing Tuesday's forum.

Organizers said that a cross-section of civic leaders, community activists, police and political figures have been invited to both events.

Activist Alvertis Simmons is organizing Thursday's forum. All information - specifically solutions - from Thursday's event will be compiled and sent to local, state and federal leaders, he said.

The forum schedule:

Tuesday, 6 p.m., at New Hope Baptist Church, 3701 Colorado Blvd.

Thursday, 7 p.m., at Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Studio, 119 Park Avenue West.
